Understanding a sentence
by Edison Z. Y., 2017-01-27, 15:10  Spam?  23.106.133....
Hi everyone,
I have difficulty understanding this:
"Автор отдаёт себе отчёт в том, что "приземлять" учебное пособие [2] и тем самым "наступать на горло собственной песне" — в высшей степени неблагодарная задача. Единственным оправданием может служить интерпретация данной части II как отклика на запросы студентов — отклика, давно подготовленного, но реализованного с большой задержкой лишь по внешним причинам. "

The author is describing his motive for writing a textbook, and "[2]" is the reference to another book.
Could you please provide me with an English translation? Thanks a lot!

The author realizes that "landing down"* a manual/textbook and, therefore, "stepping on the throat of one's own song"** is a most ungracious/unrewarding task. The only justification can be found in treating this part II as a response to the requests*** of students - a responst that has been prepared since long ago, but implemenmted with a long delay due only to external reasons.

*landing down - this word can have a number of meanings or shades of meaning in Russian, but in tis case, it mosly likely means "to make more 'material', less spiritual, less lofty", something like that. I suppose it also implies stating the ideas in simpler terms, making it easier to understand.
*stepping on the throat of one's own song* - an idiom meaning someting like "forcing yourself to do what is needed to be done or to act in a way you need to, instead of doing what you would be happy to do"
***the Russian word translated as "requests" here can also, depending on the context, mean "needs" (as in spiritual/educational needs).
