favorite sportswoman » answer
by jerlo2 (PL), 2019-04-23, 12:55  like dislike  Spam?
Hello again

My old thread does not show up at the top, after writing a new post, so I need to start new one.

How to say to a girl, she is my favorite sportswoman?

Моя любимая спортсменка.
Is this correct?

I don't want to say "my beloved sportswoman". Just a "favorite". Some dictionaries indicate that любимая also means beloved. I don't want to embarrass myself.

Is this word - спортсменка - appropriate to describe a girl (not an adult woman) ?
by demetries, 2019-04-23, 16:55  like dislike  Spam?  171.33.249....
Your phrase (Моя любимая спортсменка) is absolutely correct. In Russian, we say "я люблю эту девушку" (I love this girl), and also "я люблю апельсиновый сок" (I like orange juice), "я люблю своего кота" (I like my cat). The difference between loving and liking depends on the context. Your phrase is normal for Russians.

Yes, "спортсменка" goes well to a teenager even. Any age female, who is going in for sports, is "спортсменка".

I have this back label in a vintage (1952) oil painting and really intrigued to know who he/she was. Looks like a gallery (perhaps a state official label) with the author, title and more but i do not really know exactly what means...

A few sentences for translation or check. » answer
by jerlo2 (PL), 2019-01-26, 13:25  like dislike  Spam?
Hi there

I would like to ask for your help.

I would like to ask a girl a few questions (I have a lot of them). I mean, to write it. Could you please check for any errors?

These questions are asked by the guy, to the girl.

The first four of them:

Do you prefer watching films at the cinema or at home?
Где вы предпочитаете смотреть фильмы: дома или в кинотеатре?

Perfect height for a guy?
Идеальный рост для мальчика?

What's the best and worst thing about parkour?
Что самое лучшее и худшее в паркур?

Armwrestling. Anna versus Sasha. Who will win?
Армрестлинг. Анна vs Саша. Кто победит?

I have concerns about the last sentence. Armwrestling, in russian, it sounds like a loanword. Is it correct translation? I mean, is Армрестлинг understandable for everyone? Or is there any other, more common translation?
For example, in polish, it sounds QUITE different ("Siłować się na rękę", so we don't say "Hej, zróbmy armwrestling!", instead, we say: "Hej, siłujmy się na rękę!").

Thank you for your help.
by demetries, 2019-01-26, 13:45  like dislike  Spam?  81.25.79....

You have translated right, but there are several some little incorrects.

Perfect height for a guy?
Идеальный рост для мальчика?
Incorrect, because "мальчик" = "boy" (male person in the child age), "guy" = "парень". Must be said:
"Идеальный рост для парня?"

What's the best and worst thing about parkour?
Что самое лучшее и худшее в паркур?
Incorrect, because must be:
"Что самое лучшее и худшее в паркуре?"

Армрестлинг is absolutely understandable word for Russians, dont worry about it.

Your version:
"Добрый вечер. Когда-то, вы упоминал Тхэквондо. Вы тренируетесь? (Я не имею в виду бокс с собственной сестрой)"
“Когда-то” is used to indicate a very distant moment in the past or future, so distant that it cannot be accurately determined. For example, "когда-то на Земле жили динозавры".
Corrected version:
"Добрый вечер. Некоторое время назад вы упоминали Тхэквондо. Вы тренируетесь (я не имею в виду бокс с собственной сестрой)?"

Your version:
"У меня есть вопрос, из любопытства. Применяете ли вы желатин на волосы каждый день во время тренировок по плаванию? Или только перед большими соревнованиями?"
"Любопытство", this word in Russian has a negative connotation, so the first sentence sounds a bit impolite. To gain polite it is good to use even the subjunctive mood here.

by demetries, 2019-01-10, 03:10  like dislike  Spam?  81.25.79....

"Обламывать" is to break an end part out of whole piece of something. Also in Russian slang word "облом" means a feeling of a sudden disappointment, or situation when such the disappointment appears. "Обломить" is to give somebody the disappointment. "Обломиться" is to receive the disappointment. "Облом" is something near to "epic fail". If you do a great attempt, and this attempt had not brought a success, this is "облом".

Good luck

Short translation: the record was found in holdings for Berzniki Parish under "Czarnecki". (You can guess who looked for ways to obscure our heritage again, thus the eye roll.)
