Family photo with script » answer
by Cossack1906 (UN), 2015-10-02, 04:29  Spam?
I have a family photo which has an inscription. Trouble is that it is written in cursive handwriting and uses letters which were eliminated from the modern alphabet.   On the front is
Художественная фотографiя which I believe means something like Artistic Pictures?  But notice the letter "i" which I don't find in the modern alphabet examples.  There's a whole message on the back as well.  If someone responds I'll share the rest.  Thanks!

Family photo with script  #819187
by Truhachev (RU), 2015-10-05, 03:15  Spam?
художественная фотография means: art photography or fine art photography

Look here: http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?l1=2&l2=1&s=%F5%F3%E4%EE%E6...

Up to early 20.th century Russian type had some more letters, inclusive the letter "i", which were then abolished.
Therefore you have to do with an old lettering.

Can somebody please try and explain the meaning of this sentence:
Он по никелю и немного по понятиям.

I couldn't find it anywhere. Is it some kind of slang expression? Especially this по никелю part.
I am so confused.
Please help :)

Hello!
The meaning of this sentence can be clarified with a little more context. Are there any other sentences before and after this one? If so, give some more context, please.
If it was a conversation, what was the talk about?

Having some more information around this phrase, I could try to help you with explaining that.
See you!
Andrey

The phrase "Он по никелю"
can be understood as follows:
1) His job or business is in nickel branch ( most unlikely version)
2) It costs 1 nickel (i.e. a  5 cents coin)

PS: But it still remains to be like "reading tea leaves" without any context.
Sincerely yours
Andrey

Please help me translate this expression. I suppose it is some kind of slang but I can't find the meaning of it anywhere. It just says ты не очень. There is no adjective after that. I found some memes on the internet like this one http://risovach.ru/kartinka/6682876
but I still don't understand.

Colloquial speech:" не очень "originates from "не очень хороший; не очень крутой; не очень сильный" means as much as "так себе". Simillar meanings in English:
"nothing special, nothing particular; nothing of note; so-so; could be better; middling; nothing to write home about; plain vanilla etc

PS: The meaning can be positive or negative. It depends how you want to end the phrase. E.g.: ты не очень  плох=  you are not so bad;  ты не очень.. хорош = you are not so good (cool);  you are not really good ; ты не очень крут = you are not really cool/ not so cool

I'm trying to translate the following into English, but the online automated tools I've tried generally choke on it. There appear to be some problems with spelling and grammar, and possibly some technical terms. The original message was also improperly encoded, so perhaps there are some errors such as dropped letters from the repair of the encoding.

Поцедуа лечения:
1. Установить погамму, не запускать.
2. Копиовать папку "RU" в C:\Program Files\Magic\Resources
3. Копиовать Patch-MPT.exe из папки BIN в папку с установленной погаммой, запустить (для пользователей Vista/7 от имени администатоа), нажать на поле патча или голову животного.
или
Сгенеиовать егистационные данные на лбое имя в Patch-MPT2.exe
или
Заегистиовать погамму готовыми данными из DATA.txt

Here's the message as originally found mis-encoded.

An English equivalent for 'закуска' - native speakers' help needed » answer
by Alex-Rus (UN), 2015-07-26, 15:25  Spam?
Hi everyone! I've spent about 40 minutes trying to find a proper English word for the Russian 'закуска', meaning a small chunk of food people eat immediately after a shot of a strong drink (like vodka), but failed miserably. Words like 'snack', 'grub', 'starter', 'appetizer' or 'hors d'oeuvre' are all I found, but, clearly, those are not related to the Russian tradition of following strong drinks up with certain things, like lard, herrings, pickled mushrooms etc.
So, the question is, is there a good English equivalent for the Russian 'закуска' in this particular meaning?

May be this could help you?
закусывать водку рыбой /колбасой = drink vodka with fish /sausage. (extract from a dictionary)
Therefore закуска may be any piece of food taken during drinking some alcohol.

'Drink with' or 'Accompany', right... Seem to be sort of adaptations for native English speakers to understand what those crazy Russians mean by that word =))) But what I'm curious about is: is it a Russian-specific term? Don't people of other nationalities have this simple tradition of taking a small piece of food after a shot? If they do, there certainly must be a word for that... Native speakers - anyone here?

You'd better not try to find the exact correspondence to a word in a foreign language. Mostly it is so that translators do their translations on the sentence base, and not "word by word". Best wishes for the future!
